Statement by The California Endowment on DACA Ruling

We Must Invest in Long-Term Protections for Undocumented Californians

Los Angeles, California – In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling today that denied the administration’s call for an ending of the DACA program that protects hundreds of thousands of young immigrants, Dr. Robert K. Ross, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of The California Endowment, released the following statement:

 “While we celebrate today’s Supreme Court ruling we know this is another temporary reprieve for thousands of immigrants who must be allowed to work freely and safely and without fear of deportation.  It is important that our leaders finally recognize these individuals as Americans who contribute to our economy, culture and neighborhoods. Undocumented Californians deserve more than temporary protections and our national leaders must find long-term solutions that allow immigrants to participate in our civic and economic life.  We must continue to invest in the organizations and individuals at the frontlines of immigrant justice, including immigrant youth themselves.”

The California Endowment, a private, statewide health foundation, was established in 1996 to expand access to, quality health care for underserved individuals and communities, and to promote fundamental affordable improvements in the health status of all Californians. The Endowment challenges the conventional wisdom that medical settings and individual choices are solely responsible for people’s health. At its core, The Endowment believes that health happens in neighborhoods, schools, and with prevention.
