Ruby Marbury learned the hard way that anyone can become homeless. Despite feeling “too proud” at first, she says asking for help was the best thing she ever did.

However, Marbury notes that California’s systems of assistance are in need of help as well. Homelessness does not discriminate: it can happen to anyone when they least expect it. We need social support that recognizes this reality.

“People that were friendly to me didn't want anything to do with me anymore. It was like I had a disease or something.”

“Everyone should have a place to live. That’s like the basics.”
